Biography
Katherine E. Snyder serves as dean of the College of Engineering & Science at University of Detroit Mercy, where she leads strategic initiatives that advance student success, research excellence and community engagement. She has spearheaded multi-million-dollar projects and partnerships that expand access to high-impact learning experiences, connect the College with Detroit’s innovation ecosystem and prepare students for leadership in rapidly evolving STEM fields.
As co-principal investigator on the now $2.1-million Department of Defense-funded VICEROY Institute for Vehicle Cybersecurity, Snyder helped launch the University’s Graduate Certificate and Master of Science programs in Vehicle Cyber Engineering, addressing critical national security needs while creating new pathways for students in this high-demand field.
As principal investigator for the NIH-funded ReBUILDetroit program, Snyder has championed efforts to broaden participation in undergraduate research, particularly among underrepresented students, and to cultivate high-quality faculty mentoring that supports student persistence and success in STEM. Building on this foundation, she launched the Office of Undergraduate Research in STEM and Graduate Opportunities (OURS+GO), designed to expand research participation, promote interdisciplinary collaboration and connect students with advanced study and career pathways.
Snyder also served as principal investigator for the $300,000 Ford Motor Company Mobility grant, leading the development of the GoodTurn mobile application, which addresses real-world logistics and mobility challenges through innovative software engineering solutions. This project not only generated award-winning research publications but also engaged students in applied, industry-connected work.
In her tenure as dean, she has supported Early Assurance programs with leading medical and pharmacy schools, secured significant philanthropic investments for state-of-the-art facilities and advanced diversity, equity and inclusion through initiatives such as the College’s Enhancing Faculty Diversity Taskforce, which restructured the College’s faculty search process, and launched the University’s Search Advocate Program.
A committed educator, researcher and community partner, Snyder’s work reflects her belief that engineering and science education should be rigorous, relevant, inclusive and deeply connected to the needs and opportunities of the surrounding community. She continues to mentor faculty and students, build strategic industry and academic partnerships and position the College as a leader in integrating research, applied learning and social responsibility.
